Kanye West in Custom Made 3.1 Phillip Lim Fuchsia Blazer and Hermes Sneakers

Kanye West must be really enjoying Fashion week because he has been seen at all the major shows making sure his presence is felt by wearing the loudest, most flamboyant yet very stylish outfits. He was spotted front row at the the Jeremy Scott Spring 2011 fashion show wearing a pair of black plastic aviator sunglasses, a 3.1 Phillip Lim blazer (inspired from the women’s collection that he had custom made for himself), white pants and a pair of my favorite Hermes sneakers ($900+) in crocodile leather. I gotta say I am really loving this Rosewood movement because it’s bringing something real refreshing to the urban fashion and style that is very much needed.

Film - Hermès “La Vie Comme Un Conte"

For a few seasons Hermes had been playing with fairy-tale plots and characters while creating ad campaigns.
And for their Fall 2010 ad campaign, Hermès have decided to teach us some new ways to wear — or rather, to use — our scarves.
With the help of Constance Jablonski and Jonas Mason, we now know we can use scarves and ties as Zorro-esque capes, masks, and as escape/entrance methods.

Hermes Fall/Winter 2010/2011 Menswear Collection Review

The Hermes collection puts a major mark with elegance in today’s trends and comes on top in Fall/Winter 2010/2011 season in menswear. While in most collections we see plain shapes and neutral colors, the Hermes one combines beautiful details with all kinds of shades.

Hermes is one of France’s highest fashion houses known for their luxury goods, perfumery, lifestyle accessories and last but not least, ready-to-wear. From menswear to women’s clothes, bags, shoes, fragrances, watches, scarves or jewelry, Hermes comes on top next to other fashion brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci or Christian Dior.

Veronique Nichanian brings out fashion a stylish collection inspired by the Parisian youthful yet elegant men’s style. With a mix between urban sophisticated and vintage overall looks, this Fall/Winter 2010 season, the Hermes Menswear collection comes out romantic and very chic.

The chromatic theme chosen accentuates Hermes’s inspiration for menswear in the next season. With colors like light gray, cornflower blue, ultramarine, maroon, chocolate brown, black, rifle green, venetian red, dark pink or pure white the combination between urban street style and vintage ages comes out perfectly.

Hermès reported 55% net profits increase in first 6 months of 2010

hermès fall winter 2010 / reuters pictures

French luxury house Hermès yesterday released their financial results for the first 6 months of 2010. here are some brief points, and some of my thoughts:

- sales increased by 23% as compared to 2009: europe up 17%, US region up 26%, asia up 45%. however japan was down 2% (was it because of lady gaga defacing the birkin bags at narita airport??).

- leather goods, being their core business reported 23% increase in sales.

- net profit came in at 55% increase. assuming there wasn't anything exceptional in 2009 distorting comparisons, they must have controlled their costs very tightly, considering sales were up 20-odd %. they created 116 new jobs this year (more costs), hence savings must have been made elsewhere and not on the payroll. more fabric bags perhaps?

- they don't expect similar results for the second half of the year: they targeted a 12% increase in sales, barring any exceptional market conditions. hermès did pretty well in second half of last year, especially when the markets were picking up. hence in percentage terms a 12% increase, when the economy is still recovering, looks decent to me.

- share price in hermès increased 53% in 2010. during the financial crisis, we saw many retailers going into liquidation, closing stores, downsizing etc. it seems rational to assume that the luxury goods companies would suffer, crash and burn in that crisis. like the other industries, times like these test the leadership capabilities, how well they steer their ship. i still firmly believe that within the retail industry, fast affordable fashion and the top tier true luxury firms would survive and indeed do well. those in the middle tier pricing are just too wishy washy.

- silks and textiles reported a 17% increase in sales. speaking of silks, deluxeduck alerted me to the new 140cm x 140cm silk scarf as seen on above fall winter 2010 advertising campaign. "hurray!" i shouted to myself, finally a silk scarf big enough for men to drape nonchalantly on their shoulders. but the large format silk scarves retail at GBP510.
